It is always so great to hear reports on the progress that has taken place in the communities and individuals lives we have visited. We have just received one from the women's community leader in Nebbi, a town right up in the north west of Uganda where we went on our last trip. We held a teaching and training conference there for about 500 hundred ladies who had walked miles to be with us. It was really successful, and using interactive DVDs powered by an old generator and shown on a white bed sheet, we were able to teach these women basic life skills and answer many of their health questions. We took with us some clothes for orphans and for ladies, and a wedding and bridesmaid dress donated by the Sue Ryder Charity shop in Watford. To date, the wedding dress has been worn 6 times by different ladies at their time of marriage and has bought great happiness. We are hoping to take more on our next visit in April 2009. If you or anyone you know has a lightweight wedding dress that is simply gathering dust and moth bites in a cupboard somewhere, we know some ladies in Uganda who only dream of being able to wear a white dress on their big day. Please get in contact with us so we can get them out there!
A tailoring school has now been started, teaching and training women and girls in small scale business. They are learning how to use sewing machines, plaiting, weaving and sewing table cloths and bed sheets. In the Nebbi district, there is a high demand for stitched clothes, so they find themselves in a good place in the market. It is a growing school so we will be looking ahead at how we can further help with this initiative.
