We love to encourage our supporters to think of ways that they can use their everyday activities and jobs to help support the work we do in other nations. Jane Hatton did just that!!
Jane is the hospital chaplain at Lister hospital in Stevenage. Jane is a supporter of Eagles Wings and decided to write a note in the staff weekly bulletin asking for any unused medical suplies such as bandages and tubing that could be sent to hospitals in Africa through the charity. The response was overwhelming with all kinds of medical equipment being given to donate. A lady reading the bulletin put Jane in touch with her husband who works for Bunzl Healthcare Ltd, suppliers of medical equipment. At the time, Bunzl were cleaning out their warehouses and were happy to give Eagles Wings all the medical equipment available that they were unable to use in the UK. All the medical equipment collected in response to Jane's bulletin now added up to 7 pallets! This was overwhelming, but we now had the small problem of where to store all of these medical goods.
Fortunately, we found a great company called Abacus Transport who were able to store the pallets until we could find some way of shipping them to Africa. This was the hardest part! Even for charities, the cost of shipping can be extremely expensive.
Amazingly, we made a connection with an English doctor named Jim McWhirter, who spends much of his time volunteering at a hospital in Uganda. Dr. McWhirter put us in touch with another charity called Med-Aid. Med-Aid are a UK based charity who collect medical equipment and ship it out to hospitals in developing countries. The work they do is fantastic and we were delighted to partner with them in getting the medical equipment we had, shipped to the hospitals that really need it.
So with help from Jane Hatton, the staff at Lister hospital, Bunzl Healthcare, Abacus Transport and Med-Aid, we have been able to get life saving medical equipment out to greatly appreciative hospitals in Kenya and Uganda that otherwise, would have gone to waste.
Hopefully, we will have some pictures soon of the medical supplies being used.
Thank you!
